Sir Isaac Newton said, “in order for the motion of an object to change, a force must act upon it.” Honestly, I feel as if Jay-Z has been in motion moving forward and has yet to meet an object strong enough for that to change. A high school dropout has one the most lucrative entertainment deals in the history of music. He’s gone from peddling cocaine down to Virginia & Maryland to being on Forbes list. This year in order to even qualify for the list this year, you had to be a billionaire. In other words, this high school dropout is a billionaire. More than the streets are watching now…

Coming from Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, its not a long shot to say that the odds were against him. He’s come from living in what most would consider to be a ghetto to unparalleled success. When I heard that Jay-Z was finally writing a book, I was more than enthused. After reading about his new book, Decoded, in The Wall Street Journal, one can’t help but think, “How does he not get complacent?” I mean, he generally has achieved everything that’s possible in his field of artistry. I’ve come to think that he honestly doesn’t know how to do anything else. Let me rephrase that, he can’t sit still and not make music. I think that music is his drug, its a habit he can’t kick. In what was supposed to be his last song, ironcially titled “My 1st Song” he used a Notorious B.I.G. sample to describe his determination. As the 15 year anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, he’s still making the music he loves.

In these 15 years, I’ve developed a tremendous amount of respect for his business savvy. He’s a 40 year old black man in the United States of America and is just as marketable as Justin Timberlake. He’s continually shaped and redefined himself every year and it seems he’s still progressing. His only “competition” and I say that lightly is Diddy because Mr. Combs can’t put out the #1 albums he’s had in the past. He’s one of the few men I admire in the business sense. It seems he’s stayed true to himself, while maintaining the street edge which got him on a national level to begin with. However, back to the music. His music has been sampled countless times. The Black Album has even been mashed up with The Beatles, the only group with more number one hits and albums on the Billboard charts. He’s worked with everyone you could even want to. He owns the hip-hop genre. He is HIP-HOP. You can’t compare him with anyone, because he’s one of a kind. The man is clearly in a league of his own. Let’s “Clap for him, clap for him.” *Jay-Z voice*
